I decided that when I received my first retirement check, I was going to buy a hobby car, a convertible! I didn’t know what that was going to be, but it was going to happen!

When we began to research building an extra garage space we went to local building company to get estimates. As we left the office we looked back and saw a car that had a cover on it in their garage. So, we returned to ask the owner about their “special” car. As he rolled back the cover on the car I immediately saw the bright red paint, then the White interior on this fabulous convertible! And, he said, “it’s for sale.”

As you can tell, we did buy that car.

Wow!!!

We discovered that the car was originally bought in Remsen, Iowa. That is just a few miles from my grandfather’s birth place, Le Mars, Iowa. And its a 1972, my High School graduation year. It was meant to be.

It was all original, never had been restored. Only 70,000 miles. There were a few blemishes on the car but over all, it was super clean and in amazing condition. It came with the 400 V-8 and the owner had added glass packs to the exhaust. It was just amazing that we found this car and it became ours.

The first thing we did was to replace the glass packs with stock mufflers. They were just too loud for pleasure driving. I also ordered new lenses for the back seat curtesy lights. But other than that, the car really needed nothing and it ran beautifully.

A couple of years later, we began to realize that we just didn’t get enough driving out of the car for the investment. Our car club meetings were two hours away in the Dallas metroplex and we didn’t want to drive it through Dallas traffic. So, none of our “car” friends really got to enjoy the car with us. So, we decided to sell it, and our Mustang convertible, in exchange for a retro Thunderbird.
