Hand Built Hutch

The inspiration for this hutch comes from several places. I’ve always loved open hutch design. The homey country style has always warmed my heart. So, I’ve built a couple of open hutches before, but I’d not built one with a closed buffet base.

So, the inspiration for the closed base on this hutch came from some doors I bought at a sale a couple of years ago, and an old door I had in the shop. I used the old door for the sides of the base. I used the apron wood from the table top for the stiles on the front of the base cabinet! There was just enough wood for the job.

I also had a used table top that I cut for the top of the base. The base molding is from a 1890’s bank in Honey Grove, TX! All of this to say that this particular piece started from an old door from the 1930’s, door fronts from the 1960’s, a table top from the 1990’s, and some new wood from today!

We finished it in a sage green with a brown glaze to give it some warmth and texture. The back of the hutch is made from solid pine wainscoting stained with antique walnut color stain.

It’s 48″ long, 18″ deep and 82″ tall.
