A Mudroom Bench With a History

by | Dec 29, 2021

After seeing some doors for sale in our local swap shop we drove to the address listed. Upon our arrival, it was revealed to be Larry’s Aunt and Uncle’s former home. The owners were remodeling and changing out the doors. We discovered they were all solid red oak and we bought all 19 doors for sale!

In discussing this with Larry’s family we discovered that these doors had been hand built on the driveway of the house when it was built. We also found out that family members were involved in the building process. So, we made a FaceBook post about our discovery.

Soon afterwards, Larry’s cousins responded saying they would like to order some porch pew benches that we make out of doors. We made eight of them and delivered them to the cousins. On one delivery a cousin asked us if we could make them a custom mudroom bench. As we looked at the project, it became clear that we could use some of the remaining doors for the project. This was to be completed by Christmas for a gift to his wife.

We went to work and designed a bench that would use three 24″ doors and some other wood and trim. One of the challenges was the delivery to Celina Texas! We had to engineer this piece to fit into the back of our minivan. We made it in parts that could be assembled on site.

In the end, this project became one of my personal favorites! And, Larry’s cousin was beyond words to have this historical makeover in his home.
