Mud Room Bench Made from an Heirloom

A friend of Larry’s contacted us asking if we could make a bench out of a bed that was her father’s. She wanted to keep it as an heirloom. The bed (pictured below in an internet ad for the type of bed) was something we’d never worked with before. It was modern, and had the drawers built into the footboard.

We really had no idea how we were going to come up with a bench out of this type of bed. But, one morning, early, I woke up with an “Aha” moment. So, we just shortened the frame and cut down the height of the headboard to a more proportional height. We then added in some tongue and groove boards for the seat. I also had to cut the “bun” type feet to a shorter height to maintain the 17″ seat height.

She wanted it to remain the original stain finish so we just cleaned it up and stained the new pieces to match. After we were done, we stood back and said, “Wow! That turned out pretty well!!” We were surprised that we could do this one.

She’ll be picking it up today and we hope she’ll get many years use out of it.
